Fans of the traditional Oriental tile game of Mahjong will recognize this game, which can be played under Japanese or WMC rules. Those who don't know the game would be best advised not to even start because the in-game help is all but non-existent, and the breakdown of the rules serves only to further muddy the waters?

How to Play

You are given a hand of 13 tiles, which are adorned by characters representing different suits. Three of these suits are 'numeral' (Bars, Wons and Dots) while two are 'letter' suits (Dragons and Winds) There are a plethora of different ways that the tiles can be arranged to create a winning 'hand' - sequentially, identically in groups of three or more. From your hand, you must select a tile to discard and then choose from a 'wall' of tiles in the hope of selecting the tile that will complete your winning hand.

The strength of your 'winning' hand will govern your payout, being multiplied by your original stake. The strength of a hand is defined by the combinations of tiles drawn.

Review

As a complete Mahjong novice this game was inordinately confusing to me. I played approximately forty hands, reading the rules after ten consecutive losing hands and returning to the game to win one hand - the problem being that I had no idea what I had done in order to win it. I then read the in-game help section, which clarified things slightly - at best. I played another twenty hands and won three. The problem with the game is that the on-screen prompts are extremely limited and, for the novice, give no idea as to what the next step should be. Keen players of Mahjong should enjoy this, though, as it's visually quite pretty and, from what I can gather, very authentic. My enjoyment was spoiled by not having a clue what was going on, but if you know how to play then I think you'll quite like this.
